Storage Solutions

Always think about where you can optimise storage space in your home, this will keep clutter out of sight and leave a room that appears larger. Take advantage of architectural quirks and nooks, built-ins will be your best friend. Think a bay bench with room underneath, sofas with compartments, boxes for toys, a pouffe or a footstool with storage.

The Framework

The walls and ceilings create the frame for any room, these are responsible for establishing the atmosphere. By keeping it all painted the same colour (including trims) this creates no visual line break, making the room appear larger. Whether you opt for light and fresh or dark and moody, both will work, as long as you stick to the framework trick.

Furniture Choices

Don’t be afraid to play around with different sizes, even if you have a small space, large and less-of can actually create a great focal point and adds impact and character to a space. Plus, let’s be honest, no one can get cosy on a small sofa! Remember lots of little pieces can look cluttered, you don’t need more stuff, just more creativity.

Spatial Planning

The biggest mistake when designing a space is not having a furniture plan in place. Small rooms require more thought, so think about how you want to use the space and the purpose it’ll serve, and let that act as a guide. Remember, every inch matters so use it well.

Lighting

Light tends to get forgotten about when designing a room, but it’s key when creating a home that feels warm, inviting and functional. The overall rule is to light the walls and ceilings, this gives the impression of a larger space as it pushes the eye outwards. Think up lights, spotlights and wall sconces instead of floor lamps, you’ll want all the floor space you can get.

Soft Furnishings

When choosing a rug, make sure you go for a size that your furniture can comfortably sit on and that is in a tone the same as your flooring. This will make it blend and not draw your eye, busy styles will make the space appear cluttered.

Then you can add layers of texture to your ‘framework’ through cushions, wood finish, and hardware. This is how you can bring your personal character to your home and make it unique to you.
